Housing law
Maine's LD 2003 (2022, effective 2023) requires municipalities to allow at least one accessory dwelling unit on any lot with a single-family home where housing is permitted — effectively legalizing ADUs statewide.
LD 2003 also ended single-family-only zoning: at least two units are allowed wherever housing is permitted, and up to four units on lots in designated growth areas, plus a density bonus for qualifying affordable housing.
