Housing law

Rhode Island's 2024 housing law (effective on passage in June 2024) requires municipalities to allow one accessory dwelling unit by right in specific circumstances — including on residential lots of 20,000 sq ft or more, within an existing structure's footprint, or as a disability accommodation on an owner-occupied lot.

Rhode Island has not enacted a comprehensive statewide multifamily upzoning mandate comparable to Massachusetts; reform has advanced mainly through zoning-enabling-act amendments.
